Practical guide

How to complain

Formal complaints are most useful when they are specific, dated and supported by evidence. Use the official council links below and keep your submission receipt or reference number.

Before you submit

  • Record the date and exact time of the disturbance
  • State where you experienced it
  • Describe what you heard or saw
  • Give the approximate duration
  • Attach photographs, video or audio where appropriate
  • Keep the official registration receipt and reference number

What to say

Keep the complaint factual. Identify the type of disturbance, date, time, duration and where it was experienced. If your concern relates to operating hours, lighting or noise, say so clearly and attach relevant evidence.

After submitting

Keep the acknowledgement and reference number. You may also provide the reference privately through our incident form so formal reports can be counted without publishing personal details or complaint numbers.
